Cultivating a positive outlook in children
Better is possible. It does not take a genius. It takes diligence. It takes moral clarity. It takes ingenuity. And above all, it takes a willingness to try.” —Atul Gawande.
Some kids just seem to see the clouds instead of the sun all the time. Though everyone experiences unpleasant feelings occasionally, being pessimistic all the time is undesirable.
As parents, we want to teach our kids how to perceive both the positive and unpleasant elements of life with a more realistic and balanced perspective. To accomplish this, however, we must examine our attitudes and assist our kids in developing a good outlook on the world.
Even though you have no control over some areas of your child’s life, you can give him the encouragement and support he needs to get through the events without losing his ability to think positively. Do not make a big deal out of it if one of your kids is happy and the other is sad. Kids often develop into the person you tell them they are.
We all encounter setbacks in life, and we will not always succeed in achieving our objectives. Tell your child that setbacks can also be educational opportunities when they happen, such as when he does not make the team or an exam he studied for. The best method to succeed the following time is to try a little bit harder the next time to make the team or to receive assistance with the subject he is struggling with. Your child will develop a good attitude towards failure if you adopt the perspective that you can always try again or work a little harder to accomplish a goal.Positivity and self-worth go hand in hand. Give your youngster the chance to try out new things, and acknowledge his accomplishments. When he is young, start with simple tasks like having him assist with dishwashing or towel folding while praising his good work. When children get older, take note of their good work or good grades on school papers, and let them know how proud you are of them. Increasing their sense of worth through well-deserved praise will help them develop a positive outlook.
If you feel you are modeling negative behavior, try searching for the positive aspects of things more frequently. Optimism can be acquired at any age. It is known truth that optimistic people typically live longer and have better health. Teaching your kids to be optimistic can not only make their lives happier but healthier as well. So, virtually nothing is impossible in this world if you just put your mind up and maintain a positive attitude.
